FIRE World Map — Find Your Financial Independence Destination
The FIRE World Map is an interactive tool that helps you discover which countries fit your FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) budget. Enter your invested capital, choose a lifestyle tier, and the map instantly shows you where your money stretches furthest.
How It Works
At the heart of the FIRE movement is a simple concept: save enough money so that you can live off investment returns indefinitely. The Safe Withdrawal Rate (SWR) — typically around 4% — determines how much you can spend each year without depleting your portfolio. For example, €300,000 invested at 4% SWR gives you €12,000 per year (€1,000/month) to spend. The map compares that annual budget against real cost-of-living data for each country, telling you whether a location is FIRE ready (green), borderline (yellow), or too costly (red).
Indices and Data Explained
Affordability
The core metric: how far your invested capital goes in each country at your chosen lifestyle tier. Based on crowd-sourced cost-of-living data covering housing, food, transport, and leisure for over 190 countries and hundreds of cities.
Global Peace Index (GPI)
Produced by the Institute for Economics & Peace, the GPI ranks 163 countries by their level of safety and security. Lower scores mean more peaceful, safer countries — essential when choosing where to retire.
WHO Health System Performance
The World Health Organization's ranking of health systems across 191 member states. Combines measures of population health (DALE), responsiveness, and fairness of financial contribution. Critical for long-term retirement planning.
EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI)
EF Education First's ranking of English skills in non-native countries. Higher scores mean easier integration for English-speaking expats. Covering 100+ countries based on standardized test data.
Digital Quality of Life (DQL)
Surfshark's Digital Quality of Life index ranks countries on internet affordability, quality, e-infrastructure, e-government, and e-security. Important for remote work and staying connected abroad.
Environmental Performance Index (EPI)
Yale and Columbia's biennial ranking of 180 countries on environmental health and ecosystem vitality. Covers air quality, water sanitation, climate change mitigation, biodiversity, and more.
Composite Score
A weighted aggregate combining all of the above indices into a single score. Adjust the weights in the advanced panel to prioritise what matters most to you.
Lifestyle Tiers
Cost of living varies dramatically within a country depending on lifestyle. The map offers three tiers:
- Frugal — Cooking at home, using local public transport, minimal eating out. Ideal for lean FIRE.
- Comfortable — Regular dining out, hobbies, occasional travel. The sweet spot for most FIRE planners.
- Affluent — Restaurants, gym membership, car ownership, a nice apartment. For those who want Fat FIRE.
Capital Gains Tax
Tax matters for investors. The map includes capital gains tax rates per country, sourced from official tax authority data, so you can factor in the tax impact on your investment returns.
